Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority Ash Landfill Siting Initiative and Your Community

The DEP sets the criteria for siting an ash landfill.

Criteria
The criteria for locating an ash landfill are set by state statutes and by regulations developed by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). These criteria include:

  • Distance from any public water supply and from residential areas;
  • Proximity to a large stream or river; and
  • Suitable geology between the ash landfill and the large stream or river.

The construction and operation of an ash landfill at the proposed location would not change the existing water quality of the Shetucket River, which is adjacent to the proposed site in Franklin.

Site Selection
Following an exhaustive examination of 77 potential sites around Connecticut, we have narrowed our search to a roughly 350-acre site off Route 32 in Franklin, Connecticut, behind the former Franklin Farms property. A more intensive onsite investigation of this location will help us determine if it is truly a suitable site. We anticipate this investigation will take until early spring 2009.
